Crouch could replicate 'The Beast' package under Chaney

KNOXVILLE — In 2012 linebacker A.J. Johnson lined up in the backfield 12 times.

Johnson rushed for 21 yards with a team-high six touchdowns out of ‘The Beast’ Wildcat formation in Jim Chaney’s offense.

Now that Chaney is back as UT’s offensive coordinator, a position he held from 2009-12, freshman Quavaris Crouch could be an ideal fit to replicate Johnson’s success in ‘The Beast’ package when he is not playing linebacker.

Matt Daniel took to Twitter and created two diagrams that show what Crouch in ‘The Beast’ package could look like. Daniel highlighted one version with an extra offensive lineman and one with two tight ends and a slot wide receiver.

Crouch signed with Tennessee in December after playing both running back and linebacker in high school and will be looked upon to play on the defensive side of the ball to begin his UT career.

Johnson ran Wildcat packages in high school before coming to Tennessee. The former Vol totaled 424 tackles, three sacks, one interception, five pass deflections, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries from 2011-14.
