Former UT QB, Jets OC Bates involved in coaching carousel

NEW YORK — The New York Jets fired head coach Todd Bowles following the conclusion of the 2018 regular season.

Jeremy Bates served as quarterbacks coach under Bowles in 2017 and was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2018.

Following Bowles’ firing, Bates currently remains on the Jets’ staff as their head coaching search begins. A Jets source told Vols Wire that the possibility Bates remains in New York under the next head coach is not likely.

“I don’t think he will stick around once there is a new head coach,” Vols Wire was told. “He could end up elsewhere. I don’t get it, but he has a good rep in the league circle.”

Bates played quarterback for the Vols in 1995 and then transferred to Rice from 1996-99.

The former quarterback began his coaching career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers under Jon Gruden in 2002 as an offensive quality control coach.

2018 was Bates’ eleventh season coaching in the NFL and his third as an offensive coordinator. Bates’ lone season coaching at the college level came in 2009 when he replaced Steve Sarkisian at USC as quarterbacks coach.
