Latest on Hugh Freeze and the UT coaching search

KNOXVILLE – Tennessee’s coaching search to replace offensive coordinator Tyson Helton is in its eighth day.

Day No. 8 was one of wheeling and dealing for agent Jimmy Sexton.

Vols Wire was told Sunday night that Monday would be a big day for Sexton placing his clients in different positions to relocate to other schools or to provide leverage for an increase in pay.

Tennessee could have taken care of business Friday with former Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze. Vols Wire learned that not everyone at UT was onboard with Freeze, creating UT Interim President Randy Boyd to address the search.

Now, if Tennessee wants to hire Freeze, then they need to move quick – much like Vols Wire learned last Friday morning.

Freeze’s name was mentioned for the Liberty head coaching job today as Turner Gill resigned. Vols Wire discussed Gill’s departure with a defensive coach at Liberty and all indications were that the announcement was a surprise.

Gill told his staff Monday morning and the team at 3 p.m. Liberty administration told Vols Wire that it was too soon to discuss coaching candidates.

Freeze has also been linked to Auburn’s open offensive coordinator position as Chip Lindsey departed for the same job at Kansas. Freeze is good friends with Gus Malzahn and his daughter attends Auburn.

Vols Wire discussed Lindsey’s departure with an Auburn coach and they mentioned that his move to Kansas was a surprise. Vols Wire was also told by the coach that it was too soon to discuss Freeze joining Malzahn’s staff.

Florida State also has an opening at offensive coordinator. UMass hired Florida State offensive coordinator Walt Bell as its next head coach.

Vols Wire has learned that Freeze has had discussions with Florida State.
