Sankey believed to clear Freeze for SEC job

KNOXVILLE — Former Ole Miss head coach and current Arizona Hotshots offensive coordinator Hugh Freeze remains in discussions during Tennessee’s coaching search.

Tennessee is looking to replace offensive coordinator Tyson Helton who departed to become Western Kentucky’s head coach.

Now Brent Dougherty of 104.5 The Zone in Nashville is reporting that he expects Jeremy Pruitt to have a discussion about UT’s offensive coordinator position soon with Freeze.

Vols Wire discussed Freeze potentially taking a college job with Arizona Hotshots quarterbacks coach Steve Axman. Axman says he hopes Freeze stays on staff with Arizona.

Vols Wire has learned Thursday morning from a source in Mississippi that Freeze tried to become Western Kentucky’s head coach before Helton was hired.

“He tried to get the Western Kentucky job and didn’t get it and he has tried to get a bunch of jobs,” Vols Wire was told regarding Freeze. “To this point, Greg Sankey has not cleared him and I think Sankey would clear him because the Ole Miss and NCAA thing is completely off the table with appeals being done. The book is finally closed.”
