Pruitt recaps South Carolina loss

COLUMBIA – Tennessee (3-5, 1-4 SEC) fell to South Carolina, 27-24.

Following the loss, Jeremy Pruitt discussed his team’s play against South Carolina.

“I think for our football team there are a lot of good lessons to be learned here,” Pruitt said. “I think our guys are getting vested in trying to do things the right way.”

Tennessee had nine penalties resulting in 75 yards that hampered UT.

“When you have nine penalties, and the other team has two, we’re not good enough to overcome that – especially when they’re undisciplined penalties,” Pruitt said.

On offense, Tennessee totaled 351 yards (207 passing, 144 rushing) behind Jarrett Guarantano completing 27-of-39 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns. UT’s offense did not have a play longer than 20 yards.

“Offensively, I thought we played well enough to win the football game,” Pruitt said. “I know of one time in the red area, we get a personal foul after the whistle blows. We probably had four or five, maybe six false starts. So it’s hard to overcome that. We had a couple drops. We have to do better than that.”

Tennessee gave up 376 yards to South Carolina – 224 yards on the ground and 152 through the air. The Gamecocks extended the field with three plays over 20 yards.

“Defensively we got one turnover, gave up explosive plays,” Pruitt said. “You can’t do that. You have to make the other team earn it.“
