KNOXVILLE — Tennessee’s win at No. 21 Auburn was big for the team learning how to win.

The win was UT’s first against SEC competition in 11 games and provides confidence for the second half of the season.

“I think any time you win, or you play well, it does give you a little bit of confidence and I think our players probably need that,” Jeremy Pruitt said. “They work hard. You work hard to try and have success and on this day in time, it’s measured in wins and losses.”

Pruitt understands that the win at Auburn was not perfect and he will continue coaching his players to a standard that will eventually result in winning more SEC games going forward.

“When we watch the tape, there’s going to be a lot of guys that played their best game, and there’s going to be some guys that played their worst game,” Pruitt said of the Auburn game. “So we have to get everybody to be at their best when it counts the most.”

The Vols are 3-3 (1-2, SEC) and need to win three games in their final six contests against Alabama, at South Carolina, Charlotte, Kentucky, Missouri, and at Vanderbilt to become bowl eligible.

Kicking off Alabama week, Pruitt made it clear that there is a lot of work remaining in continuing to get better.

“I didn’t sit there all summer and say I hope we’re 3-3 after six games, but I think there’s lots of lessons that we’ve learned every week,” he said. “I said every week when we execute and do what we’re supposed to do, we give ourselves a chance. When we don’t, we don’t. We’ve got to execute at a high level for us to have success and that’s what we’re striving to do every day.”
