Pruitt details being more successful in third-and-short situations

KNOXVILLE — Through five games, Tennessee has been successful in converting 23 third-down plays out of 64 attempts.

During Jeremy Pruitt’s final media session of the bye week, he was asked about being more successful in third-and-short situations. Tennessee ranks tied for 86th nationally in first downs after Week 5 games.

The first-year UT head coach says it comes down to being more successful on early downs, as he says “like first-and-10.”

“It goes back to execution, not having mental errors, stepping with the right foot,” Pruitt said. “If you’re going to run a play and I’m standing right here and we’re going to run the ball here, and I’m an offensive lineman right here, the most important thing I would say if we’re going to run the ball right here is not to get beat across my face this way. It’s common sense.

“Things like that. So, we’ve got to continue to improve on that. Guys have to have a better understanding. We need to play with better pad level, need get more push and the backs need to knock the holes forward.”
