KNOXVILLE — After winning a share of the SEC regular season championship last season, Tennessee’s basketball team approaches a new season with the majority of the roster returning.

With the amount of talent returning comes expectations.

Rick Barnes met with media to kick off Tennessee’s media day and the UT head coach says if there is any complacency among his players, then that is his fault.

“If that happens, that’s my fault,” Barnes said. “If complacency sets in, that’s my fault. I can assure you that’s not going to happen, because it’s up to me and my coaching staff. I think I have the best coaching staff in the country, and we’re not going to let that happen.”

Barnes views his players of having character as they enter a new season and are ready to go to work in achieving more success.

“I think we have the kind of character on this team,” Barnes said. “With our older players, they expect a lot from themselves too. They know it’s not going to be easy. They do. But they know every time they come in, that practice is going to be really, really hard.

“They know the details are going to be called out if they don’t do it. You guys have been here with me from the beginning. When you see practice, you see nothing changes. We’re not going to let complacency set in, and if it does with any particular player, I think we’ve got legitimate depth that we can go to. There’s not a better motivator than sitting on that bench.”
