Robert Neyland Jr. previews UT vs. Florida

KNOXVILLE — Former Tennessee football player and son of General Robert Neyland, Robert Neyland Jr., played on UT’s 1951 national championship team.

Neyland Jr. gave his thoughts to Vols Wire on Tennessee’s first three games of the 2018 season and rivalry week against Florida.

“They are giving their effort and out there doing their best, that’s all you can ask,” Neyland Jr. said of the Vols. “We have a good quarterback, real good running backs and excellent receivers. The things we have to work on is the offensive and defensive lines.”

Through three games, Neyland Jr. likes what he sees from Jeremy Pruitt building the program even during the season-opening defeat to West Virginia.

“He is doing an excellent job despite in how the West Virginia game turned out to be,” Neyland Jr. said of Pruitt. “I was encouraged even in that game. We were still trying to drive in the fourth quarter, so that tells me the team is not quitting and using what ability they can to put in effort.”

Now rivalry week is here as Florida is set to take on the Vols in Neyland Stadium at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Neyland Jr. understands it will take a huge effort from Tennessee to beat Florida.

“I just hope that our team can come up with a huge effort this Saturday because that is what it is going to take,” he said. “Even though Kentucky beat Florida, Kentucky has a good team this year. They are going to be awful tough for us to beat even though we play them at home.

“If we get out there and play the very best that we can, eliminate fumbles on the goal line, and catch punts – that will kill you against a team like Florida. So if they can keep away from those things, I think they definitely have a chance.”

Before any big game for Neyland Jr.’s father, the General would point out to his team that “resolution and determination, that’s what’s going to win for you today.”

On Saturday night, Tennessee will need resolution and determination for an opportunity to beat Florida.
