Vols are searching for leadership with SEC play nearing

KNOXVILLE — At SEC Media Days in Atlanta, Eli Wolf discussed the topic of finding leaders throughout the Tennessee team for the 2018 season.

Two games into the season, leaders still have not been determined.

“Anybody that has played college football knows it is not as easy said than done,” Wolf said of finding team leaders at SEC Media Days. “You have to hold your brothers accountable, it is hard. It is a process that we are doing right now. We are still looking for leaders. We probably won’t know who those leaders are until it gets further in the season.”

During Jeremy Pruitt’s weekly segment on Vol Calls this week, the first-year UT head coach said that he is the leader of the team since players have not stepped up.

“I’ve been on some teams and some staff’s where we had really good leadership and the players controlled the team,” Pruitt said. “I have been on some teams and some staff’s where the coaches have do it.”

Confrontation is a way to hold teammates accountable in getting better as a team. It is not always easy to standup and confront others that you are close with and it is not the makeup of every player to have the ability and understanding in how to go about it.

“It is hard to do regardless if things are not going good because somebody you met your freshman year, or some guys even grew up with them, and you go there and tell them you need to step it up,” Wolf said at SEC Media Days. “To tell another grown man, that is not an easy thing to do, but you have to have a mutual respect for each other and know what buttons to press. Ultimately they are going to thank you in the end.”

Pruitt went on to say that it is not always an easy task for players to take on a role of confronting teammates and if one does take on the role, then doing it the right way is a necessity.

“It’s not easy confronting your friends,” Pruitt said on Vol Calls. “It’s not easy confronting your roommate, but that’s part of being a leader. We have to continue to develop those guys. Until we get to that point, the coaching staff is going to have to be the leaders.

“If you are going to confront somebody then you better be doing it right yourself so there’s a lot of pressure in that to do it right all the time. I think it takes confidence.”
