Paul Bain placed on scholarship

KNOXVILLE — Defensive lineman Paul Bain transferred to Tennessee from Tusculum College following the 2014 season.

Bain served as a practice squad member in 2015 and had his black stripe removed on August 31.

The 6-foot-5, 290-pound defensive tackle made his UT career debut against Tennessee Tech in 2016, recording two tackles. He also saw game action in the Music City Bowl against Nebraska.

Bain played an important part of Tennessee’s 42-41 overtime win over Georgia Tech last season, blocking a game-winning field goal attempt by the Yellow Jackets as time expired.

While serving as a walk-on, Bain has spent time working at Champs Sports in Knoxville to earn money.

Jeremy Pruitt has placed Bain on scholarship and both discussed the decision this week.

“I think Paul is a guy that works really hard,” Pruitt said. “We have a lot of walk-ons in our program that work really hard, and they’re all over the country, and I think it builds character.”

Bain hopes his story can affect somebody who is down or did not think they can accomplish anything.

“They can look at my story and think, ‘Hey, I’m just a kid who worked at Champs,” he said. “I wasn’t recruited very much. Now, I’m in a position where I’m playing in front of 102,000 people. That’s just been a dream I took to the very end.

“I hope somebody sees my story and continues to work and sees that anything is possible as long as they put the work into it.”
