Tyson Helton talks UT quarterback play

KNOXVILLE — Tennessee offensive coordinator Tyson Helton spoke at the Knoxville Quarterback Club today.

Helton mentioned that quarterback Jarrett Guarantano has done a “good job” but “still has a long way to go.”

Holding on to the ball too long was an area that Helton mentioned of Guarantano, saying that the redshirt sophomore needs to make sure he does not “hold the ball forever.”

Against East Tennessee State, Guarantano’s box score had one rushing attempt for -6 yards that came from taking a sack.

Helton said Guatantano was allowed to run 3-4 times during the game, but did not.

The play Guarantano was sacked, Helton said the signal-caller elected to run and that “he should’ve thrown it away.”

Continuity on the offensive line will help Guarantano going forward for protection and Helton said that they are “still trying to develop the line.”

“We don’t want to hold the ball forever,” he said. “So he (Guarantano) does a great job of getting it out, but that’s something we’re working on.”
