UT vs. ETSU: Charles Kelly, Daryl Daye reunite

KNOXVILLE — Tennessee will take on East Tennessee State Saturday at Neyland Stadium with a 4 p.m. ET kickoff.

The game will reunite Tennessee special teams coordinator and safeties coach Charles Kelly and ETSU’s special teams coordinator and defensive line coach Daryl Daye.

Daye was head coach at Nicholls State from 1999-2003 and hired Kelly as defensive backs coach in 2002.

The hiring process took part during a fundraiser at a golf tournament.

“I hired Charles out of Eufaula High School in Alabama,” Daye said in the book Fulmer Hires Pruitt. “He met us at a fundraiser at a golf tournament and I put him on a par three on the back nine and told him if he makes more money than the other guy I had on another par three, that I will hire you. So when the tournament was almost over, somebody told him that the guy on the other par three had him beat by 150 dollars. So, Charles went in his pocket and got out 160 dollars and put his own money in there and we hired him.

“Years later, Charles told me about that and I told him the real truth is that there was not anybody on that other par three. So that is how I hired him, but we did our research on him and knew we were going to hire him, we were just getting to know what kind of person he was. Charles has always been a guy that has been very thorough. I think he could have been just as content staying in high school, raising kids and being a teacher, that is the kind of guy he is being humble and likes to make a difference in those kids. So that was an easy hire for us.”
