CHARLOTTE – Redshirt sophomore quarterback Jarrett Guarantano completed 19 of 25 passes for 172 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in the season-opening 40-14 loss to No. 17 West Virginia.

After a quarterback competition that was close during fall training camp between Guarantano and Stanford graduate transfer Keller Chryst, Jeremy Pruitt felt that it was important to give the starter time during the game.

“We felt like it was important to give who we decided to be the quarterback a chance to be the quarterback, not to look over their shoulder,” Pruitt said following the game. “If they start slow, they got a chance to rebound. I think Jarrett did. I think he did. I thought he kept his poise, which is important for a quarterback.”

Chryst entered the game late on the final four plays of the contest, not having a pass attempt and with four handoffs.

“I think that both guys, talking about Keller, they both deserve to play,” Pruitt said. “They’ve worked really hard in camp. It’s been a really close battle between those two guys.”
