CHARLOTTE — Tennessee opened the game against No. 17 West Virginia with a first quarter they would want to forget about.

The Vols trailed the Mountaineers 10-0 going into the second quarter after only totaling 27 yards on 15 plays. Tennessee converted two third-down conversions to own the time of possession 9:03 to 5:57 in the opening quarter. West Virginia totaled 139 yards in the first quarter with 114 yards coming through the air.

Tennessee opened the second quarter by getting back in the game with a 17-play, 78-yard drive in 8:47 with a Jarrett Guarantano to Dominick Wood-Anderson touchdown.

Tennessee’s defense answered following the touchdown by holding West Virginia to a three-and-out. The Vols’ offense had the ball back with 5:08 remaining in the second quarter and could not find the scoreboard again, giving the ball back to West Virginia with only 1:52 remaining in the first half. The Mountaineers made a field goal making it a 13-7 game at halftime.

After a one-hour and five-minute lightning delay during halftime, the second half kicked off.

The Mountaineers scored a touchdown on four plays consisting of 68 yards in 2:08, extending their lead to 20-7. The Vols answered back with a five-play, 75-yard drive in two minutes to make the game, 27-14 with six minutes remaining in the third quarter.

The Vols could not answer and keep up with West Virginia, losing 40-14. The Mountaineers totaled 547 yards behind quarterback Will Grier who finished 25-34, 429 yards and five TDs.
