Chris Rumph: UT's staff has 'no egos, everybody on same plan'

KNOXVILLE — Jeremy Pruitt put together arguably the best coaching staff from top-to-bottom in the SEC and even nationally.

A championship pedigree makes up Pruitt’s staff on both sides of the ball in Tyson Helton, Will Friend, David Johnson, Brian Niedermeyer, Chris Weinke, Kevin Sherrer, Chris Rumph, Tracy Rocker, Charles Kelly, and Terry Fair.

“Organization, having a plan and trusting the plan” is what co-defensive coordinator Chris Rumph says makes Pruitt and the coaching staff successful.

Rumph, in a season-opening media availability, said trust is the biggest thing that makes Pruitt successful and is why he is in a position currently as head coach with the ability of hiring a championship staff.

“I think one of the most important things as head coach, everybody has to trust you,” Rumph said. “You have to have a plan and you have to be able to bring everybody in line so that everybody can speak the same language from the administration, to people on campus, academics, the weight room, the cafeteria, custodians, nutritionists, everybody must speak the same language.

“I think he (Pruitt) has done a great job of bringing people in and being part of the process.”

Rumph views the staff as powerful and one that does not have any egos that are getting in the way of everyone’s goal of competing and winning championships.

“The staff is a powerful staff,” he said. “Sometimes I look around the room and there is Charles Kelly, Tracy Rocker, Kevin Sherrer, Tyson (Helton) and so on. It is really impressive and the best thing about it is these guys do not have an ego.

“You can go in any coaches room and this guy may have an idea and I can say I don’t believe that will work, and it’s vice versa and there are no egos and everybody is on the same plan. It is amazing with the guys that we have on staff with their backgrounds and track records. Just to be so humble is a blessing. It could be guys in the coaches room saying they are the ones that created all of this, but it is humble guys in there.”
