Warren Burrell has 'coverage skills that are off the charts and is the definition of a lock down corner'

Warren Burrell committed to Tennessee for the 2019 recruiting class.

Burrell, a cornerback from North Gwinnett High School in Suwanee, Ga., visited Tennessee in June and holds other SEC offers from Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, Ole Miss, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt.

Burrell can play on the line of scrimmage and is a shutdown player.

North Gwinnett head coach Bill Stewart told Vols Wire that Burrell “is an enthusiastic kid that works hard, has a competitive edge and is long and fast, which is what SEC corners need to be.”

Jeremy Pruitt’s ability to form relationships with high school coaches helped land the Georgia recruit.

“I had the pleasure of going to their coaches clinic and was very impressed in what he is doing,” Stewart said. “He (Pruitt) has an open door in developing relationships with high school coaches and that will help him get players.”

North Gwinnett defensive backs coach Jeff Carlberg told Vols Wire that UT’s latest commit “is an outstanding coverage guy and is an impact player in the secondary.”

Burrell had five interceptions last year and two were returned for touchdowns, although one touchdown was called back due to the new blind-side blocking rule.

Carlberg says the 6-foot-1, 170-pound prospect has “coverage skills that are off the charts and is the definition of a lock down corner.”

Burrell has long arms and has the movement to cover any type of wide receiver on the outside.

“He is a long arm kid that is tall, with great acceleration, great hips and can change direction and all those skills you’re looking for,” Carlberg said. “He is a guy that can be out on an island and cover a guy where the receiver is 5-foot-9 or is a tall, lanky 6-foot-4 guy that all the programs are going with.”
