Phil Savage on Pruitt: 'Real key will be establishing his methodologies and his systems this year'

Recent Alabama Crimson Tide Sports Network radio color analyst Phil Savage thought highly of Jeremy Pruitt while at Alabama.

Savage served as Alabama’s color analyst from 2009-2017 and now takes on a role as the General Manager of the Phoenix franchise in the new Alliance of American Football league.

In the book Fulmer Hires Pruitt, Savage says that Pruitt “within the building was highly respected at Alabama.”

“Jeremy’s X’s and O’s ability were really thought highly of along with his skills to recruit,” Savage said. “He had a real connection to the players and could speak their language, so to speak, so there was a really tight bond with he and the players.”

Competitiveness and having a hardened edge from Pruitt are areas that Savage views that will get Tennessee’s program back to winning ways.

“Jeremy is extremely competitive and is a football coach,” he said. “He will bring an edge to Tennessee in terms of a hardened edge of the whole team of how they will approach practice, offseason practice, training camp and ultimately the game.

“The real key will be establishing his methodologies and his systems this year, taking inventory on what they really have and infusing the recruiting classes over the next few years to fall in alignment in how he wants to do things. I think he will be very disciplined in terms of his approach and what he wants to do.”

Savage also says as Pruitt is building the foundation of his program at Tennessee, having Phillip Fulmer as athletics director “takes some of the off-field burden off of Jeremy and will allow him to focus on coaching the team.”
